EDUARDO NAVARRO (BREATHSPACE)

Gasworks presents the first UK solo exhibition by Buenos Aires-based artist Eduardo Navarro. Sitting in a corner of the gallery, the viewer encounters “Self-Doll” (2020), a stuffed humanoid covered in orange fleece. In a time of strict distancing regulations, Self-Doll has become a surrogate for the artist, acting as Navarro’s proxy in the exhibition and for public events. Throughout the exhibition the artist will communicate through the doll at random times, inviting conversations with the audience.

THE BOTANICAL MIND. ART, MYSTICISM AND THE COSMIC TREE

Drawing on indigenous traditions from the Amazon rainforest; alternative perspectives on Western scientific rationalism; and new thinking around plant intelligence, philosophy and cultural theory, the online exhibition »The Botanical Mind» investigates the significance of the plant kingdom to human life, consciousness and spirituality across cultures and through time. It explores ideas of plant sentience, indigenous cosmologies, radical botany, Gaia theory, quantum biology, and the influence of psychoactive plant medicines.

Paz Errázuriz: Próceres [National Heroes]

‘Próceres [National Heroes]’ is a newly printed series (2018) that Paz Errázuriz originally took in 1983. Taken in a government run warehouse in Chile, ‘Próceres [National Heroes]’ captures the last evidence of toppled Chilean statues. These monuments had been violently dismantled and damaged during the height of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1974–1990). This exhibition at Cecilia Brunson Projects in London is the first public showing of this series.

PATRICIA DOMÍNGUEZ: GREEN IRISES

Chilean artist Patricia Domínguez explores healing practices emerging from the points where many worlds meet, clash and overlap as a result of colonial encounters. Rooted in the artist’s ongoing investigation of ethnobotany in South America, her first UK solo exhibition invites the viewer to envision possible futures for humans and plants thriving in the cracks of modernity.

Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe & Luis Romero:venezuelan Pavilion

This year, the Venezuelan Pavilion failed to open its doors to the public during the preview days of Venice Biennale amongst the political turmoil that has taken over the country since the beginning of 2019. Unintentionally, the closed pavilion became a powerful metaphor for the devastating effect of twenty years of disastrous cultural policies in the country -not to mention numerous other government policies that have led to the current humanitarian crisis. As a response to this episode, Kupfer invited Venezuelan artists Luis Romero and Sheroanawe Hakihiiwe to stage their own guerrilla pavilion in East London.
