OPEN CALL: ENSAYOS SOBRE ARTE LATINO Y LATINOAMERICANO

El ICAA (International Center for the Arts of the Americas del Museum of Fine Arts – MFAH, Houston) lanza su convocatoria para participar en el Premio Peter C. Marzio 2022 para Investigación Notable en Arte Latinoamericano y Latino. Porta el nombre del fallecido y durante largo tiempo director del MFAH, bajo cuya gestión se estableció el ICAA en 2001. El premio es un reconocimiento al conocimiento innovador aplicado a los campos artísticos -moderno y contemporáneo- de lo latinoamericano y lo latino.

Se otorgará un premio de 2.500 dólares para estudiante graduado(a) y de 1.000 dólares para estudiante no graduado(a) a quienes escriban una ponencia académica basada en fuentes primarias, cuyos materiales están disponibles en el Archivo Digital ICAA como Documentos de Arte Latinoamericano y Latino, así como en la serie de libros que lo acompañan, Critical Documents of 20th‐Century Latin American and Latino Art. Los ensayos serán evaluados por un comité de premiación compuesto por docentes vinculados a la red de profesionales del ICAA. El par de propuestas escogidas será publicada en la serie digital Working Papers.

Los fondos para la premiación han sido otorgados por The Transart Foundation for Art and Anthropology (Houston), organización privada y sin fines de lucro que apoya el proceso creativo de artistas contemporáneos y especialistas que proyecten en su obra investigación relevante y avanzada a niveles tanto antropológicos como socioculturales.  

La fecha límite para enviar las postulaciones es el 1° de junio de 2022. Lo(a)s ganadore(a)s se anunciarán en el mes de septiembre de 2022. 

ELEGIBILIDAD

Cualquier estudiante a nivel graduado o en proceso, inscrito en un Plan de Estudios de Estados Unidos o del extranjero, está en condiciones de presentar una ponencia a ser considerada para el Premio Peter C. Marzio. Los ensayos pueden presentarse en inglés, español o portugués. Lo(a)s autore(a)s titulados deben valerse de cinco fuentes del archivo digital como mínimo, y lo(a)s no graduado(a)s de dos fuentes. Además, deberán involucrarse con dichos materiales en profundidad, por ejemplo, de qué manera las fuentes citadas del archivo se hallan relacionadas al argumento o a la metodología y no son simplemente citadas. Se solicita que la lista de citas del archivo digital sea incluida en el formulario de solicitud. 

No se aceptarán propuestas que ya fueron publicadas o hayan sido enviadas a otras publicaciones/concursos antes de que los ganadores del Premio PCM hayan sido anunciados. Aquellas propuestas escritas más de dos años antes de la solicitud no se tomarán en cuenta. 

Se alienta a que los estudiantes envíen sus propuestas, recomendándose que entreguen la ponencia a un corrector de pruebas, o bien consejero académico o, mínimamente, a alguien con amplio dominio de la lengua en que ha sido escrita. Una breve Carta de Recomendación (a incluirse en el formulario de solicitud) debe ser complementada por el consejero académico confirmando su revision del texto y que no será publicado en ningún otro lugar, incluso que el estudiante está debidamente matriculado en un programa académico.

The ICAA is pleased to issue a call for participation for the 2022 edition of the Peter C. Marzio Award for Outstanding Research in Latin American and Latino Art. Named for the late, longtime director of the MFAH, who oversaw the establishment of the ICAA in 2001, the award recognizes new scholarship in the field of modern and contemporary Latin American and Latino art.

A prize of $2,500 will be granted to a graduate student, and $1,000 to an undergraduate student, who each produce outstanding academic papers based on the primary source materials available from the digital archive Documents of Latin American and Latino Art and its companion book series, Critical Documents of 20th‐Century Latin American and Latino Art. The papers will be reviewed by an award committee composed of faculty members in the ICAA network of scholars. The two selected papers—one graduate and one undergraduate-level paper—will be published in the digital Working Papers series.

The award is generously underwritten by The Transart Foundation for Art and Anthropology, Houston, a private nonprofit organization, supporting the creative process of contemporary artists and scholars, who integrate advanced and relevant social, anthropological or cultural research in their work.

The deadline for submissions is June 1, 2022. Award winners will be announced in September 2022. 

ELIGIBILITY

Any graduate or upper-level undergraduate student enrolled in a program in the U.S. or abroad is eligible to submit a paper for consideration for the Peter C. Marzio Award. The paper must be substantially based on the primary and critical materials available through the Documents Project digital archive, accessed through this website and companion book series, Critical Documents of 20th Century Latino American and Latino Art. Papers may be submitted in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.  Authors are required to utilize a minimum of 5 sources (for graduate essays) and 2 sources (for undergraduate essays) in the digital archive and should engage with materials in a substantive way (e.g. in what ways are the cited archival sources germane to the argument or methodology), rather than merely cite them. Please include a list of citations from the digital archive in the application form. 

Submissions must not have been previously published, nor should they be sent for consideration to other publications until the PCM Award winners have been announced. Papers written more than two years prior to submission are not eligible for consideration.

We strongly encourage students who are intending to submit papers to have their submissions proofread by their academic advisor and at least one other editor who is proficient in the language in which their papers were written. A brief Letter of Support (included in the application form) must be completed by the academic advisor stating they have reviewed the essay, confirm that it has not or will not be published elsewhere, and confirm that the student is in good standing in an academic program.
