En las obras de estos artistas, Latinoamérica nunca desaparece: reaparece como memoria, materialidad y conflicto, en diálogo constante con la experiencia migrante. González-Torres, Motta, Torres y De Nieves construyen así una genealogía queer latina que transforma a Nueva York al mismo tiempo que es absorbida por sus instituciones culturales, abriendo preguntas incómodas sobre pertenencia, apropiación y dependencia mutua entre la ciudad y los artistas que la redefinen.

De Nieves (Michoacán, México, 1983) es un artista absolutamente interdisciplinar. Su práctica está llena de referencias a la deslumbrante imaginería de su Michoacán natal, así como a la alegría y el fervor de los clubes y la cultura queer de Nueva York, donde vive actualmente.

«De Por Vida» [For Life] brings together thirteen artists whose works portray cycles of life, death and legacy. The exhibition at Company (New York) presents Latinx artists Alina Perez, Bony Ramirez, Diana Sofia Lozano, Felipe Baeza, Frieda Toranzo Jaeger, José De Jesus Rodriguez, Oscar Nñ, Raúl de Nieves, Rose Salane, Ruben Ulises Rodriguez Montoya, Sanchez Kane, Sergio Miguel, and Troy Michie.
RAÚL DE NIEVES: ETERNAL RETURN & THE OBSIDIAN HEART
“Eternal Return and The Obsidian Heart” is, to date, the most comprehensive survey of work by Raúl de Nieves (1983). De Nieves investigates divinity, desire, and decadence across material, emotional, and spiritual realms. The artist draws inspiration from his childhood spent in Michoacán, Mexico, where public religious ceremonies and private rituals incorporate elaborate costuming and theatrical components. Coming of age in DIY scenes in San Diego and San Francisco also energized de Nieves with a theatrical approach to art making.
RAÚL DE NIEVES: FINA
«Fina» is the first solo museum exhibition by Raúl de Nieves (b. 1983, Michoacán, Mexico). Through processes of accumulation and a celebration of excess, de Nieves transforms humble materials into spectacular objects and immersive narrative environments. Presented by the Cleveland Museum of Art, «Raúl de Nieves: Fina» features a new site-specific installation of figurative sculptures on a central mirrored structure in the museum Transformer Station’s main gallery. De Nieves mines personal and collective histories, recombining fragments of the past to create timeless fantastical worlds.

A la mayoritaria presencia de artistas femeninas que han sido seleccionadas se ha sumado una inusual cantidad de creadores provenientes de zonas conflictivas y poco exploradas, tales como Irán, Turquía, Vietnam o Puerto Rico. Si la Bienal se ha planteado como un barómetro de los tiempos, es posible que una de las primeras conclusiones sea que aquel modelo de artista de origen europeo, blanco y que posee una visión, una cultura superior y una postura mesiánica, ya no es posible.
